Abstract
Ownership Transition in the 21st Century: How Things Have Changed

A good ownership transition plan bears much fruit: it helps principals identify the next generation of leaders and ensures continuity while giving retiring owners an exit strategy. It can also create new opportunities and expand a firm’s geographic reach. Learn about the latest trends in transition planning and how to choose the right transfer mechanism for your company.

Session abstract and business practice implications of the proposed session are:

Every engineering and consulting firm needs an effective plan to recognize new leadership, transfer ownership and to permit the founders to transition their ownership in the firm and convert their investment in the firm to cash.

This program, based on the presenter’s popular book “Architect’s Essentials of Ownership Transition” published by John Wiley & Sons for the AIA’s practice series, will explore essential issues, including how to: establish value, design an ownership transition program and choose appropriate transfer mechanisms, and identify leaders.

Learning objectives
o   How to determine a firm’s value using valuation tools
o   The specific fundamental steps of transferring ownership internally
o   How to select potential firm leaders and the best way to prepare for eventual transition
