General Description
The Sustainable Design Committee seeks to establish/advocate the role of the engineer in the developing field of sustainable design.  The committee holds monthly meetings to discuss the role of the engineer in the sustainable design process, to provide guidelines for the contributions of the engineer to the sustainability of a project, and to review current projects and trends in sustainability.
Long Term Charges
- Establish SEAONC’s presence in the sustainable design community.
- Provide input regarding sustainable design as it relates to structural engineering in the regulatory environment, including code writing and industry standards.
- Provide a forum to develop, disseminate and share ideas and information.
- Be aware of developing trends as they relate to structural engineering.
- Support the judicious implementation of sustainable design in the built environment. - Provide liaisons to and participate with other organizations that also participate in or would be effected by sustainable design.
- Make presentations that support the role of structural engineering in sustainable design to adjunct organizations.
- Publish articles in the SEAONC newsletter to keep members informed of issues.
- Write position papers regarding structural engineering issues with respect to sustainable design.

Short Term Charges(July 2008 - June 30, 2009)

- Establish liaison relationships with adjunct organizations.  Such organizations may include but not be limited to: AIA (SF & Eastbay Chapters), USGBC-NCC, Cities of San Francisco, Oakland, Fremont, San Jose, ACI, AISC
- Solicit general members to join the committee
- Present paper “Consideration of Performance Based Design:  A Structural Engineer’s Role” at 2008 SEAOC Convention
- Advocate consideration of building performance in USGBC’s LEED Rating system and CA Green Building Code through presentations to client based organizations such as AIA, USGBC-NCC, BOMA, etc.
- Encourage involvement of SDC members in other related organizations such as USGBC, AIA-COTE, and SEI-SDC
- Give presentations concerning sustainable design to other committees in the branches of SE, AEC and the community at large
- Collaborate with other committees to promote common interests
- Organize cross-disciplinary mini-seminar series on sustainable design synergies.   This series would focus on how SE’s can better contribute to the sustainable design team as a whole.  
-  Increase online web presence through development of SEAONC SDC website.  Create website accessible to the general public for sustainable design resources.
-
Develop organizational chart for committee to facilitate delegation and communication of responsibilities.
-Develop and distribute single-page information pamphlets on various sustainable design topics
