The Samsung Device Solutions Americas Headquarters in San Jose, designed by NBBJ, is a new collaborative campus which includes a ten-story office tower, data center, parking structure, and café. Robert Pallmann, Structural Engineer and Associate at Arup, will present on the unique architectural and structural design of the campus which was driven by an integration of indoor and outdoor spaces.
The office tower which is organized around a central courtyard, includes open air garden floors which offer occupants clear external views and result in a structure that appears to float at every third level. The 45x300 foot column-free areas at the perimeter of these garden levels are accommodated via two-story cantilevered steel trusses. To achieve this ambitious design on a highly seismic site, a site specific vertical response spectrum analysis was performed and unique sliding joints were developed for the 180 foot long trusses. Careful detailing and coordination was also required between the steel truss structure and the special reinforced concrete core walls providing ductile stability to the tower.
Other challenges and solutions of the structural design for the campus will be presented including dealing with large deflections for glazed facades, efficient design for garden loading, liquefaction risk, service integration, and a 9 month concept to structural permit design schedule.
