November South Bay Dinner Meeting

Construction is wrapping up on the new 850,000 sq ft, $1B, New Stanford Hospital and it is expected to open in late 2018.  The replacement hospital consists of four seven-story patient towers that spring up from a three-story podium. Each pod contains patient rooms and features a 30ft cantilever around the perimeter, supported by Vierendeel frames, requiring extensive vibration analysis.  The building is seismically isolated using friction pendulum isolators with a steel moment frame superstructure designed to be essentially elastic at the MCE.
The architectural design is focused around the patient experience, with all rooms located round the perimeter with views to the hills.  The hospital includes a 150ft column-free central atrium, topped with a glass and steel grid-shell dome structure.  The building includes a 120ft clear span at the lobby and an extensively landscaped public space on the 3rd floor.
A base-isolated pedestrian bridge connects the new hospital with the existing fixed-base hospital. A series of linkages within the bridge were incorporated to avoid the need for a massive seismic joint between the buildings.
A new 1,000 car parking structure was also constructed directly adjacent to the new hospital.

Rafael Vinoly Architects served as the Architect of Record and Nabih Youssef Structural Engineers was the structural engineer for the project.
