Business Forum Panel Discussion: Working with Multiple Generations

Moderated by Emily Guglielmo

Tuesday, April 24, 12-1:30pm

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (100 Pine Street, SF, 17th Floor)

Five generations of structural engineers are currently active in the profession.  While this generational mix adds valuable diversity to the workforce, it also has the potential for conflict and disagreement.  This session will host panelists at different stages in their careers, and representing the following generations.

Traditionalist: Eph Hirsch

Baby Boomer: Mason Walters (Forell)

Generation X: Claire Moore (HOK)

Generation Y: Theresa Curtis (TT)

Generation Z: Eddie Vega (Holmes)

Each generation is influenced by the major historical events, social trends, and cultural phenomena of its time.  The mix of influences result in a melting pot of backgrounds and expectations.  Each group has its own distinct characteristics and values based on its generation’s life experiences.  This session aims to explore differences and similarities between the various groups, ways to leverage the uniqueness of the generations, and suggestions for successful integration of a multi-generational workplace.

We will explore topics such as:

•             Changes in recruitment,

•             Benefits and salary motivations,

•             Employee engagement,

•             Work ethic and values,

•             Feedback, rewards, and motivation,

•             Technology,

•             Workplace flexibility,

•             Work and family life,

•             Differences in preferred methods of communications,

•             Strategies for cross-generational leadership,

•             Corporate culture
