About this event
CEC, in collaboration with Holmes US and Plant Construction Company, invites you to a guided site tour of UC Law’s historic tower at 100 McAllister, San Francisco. The project, now under construction, is a full seismic retrofit of a 1930 landmark, originally the Temple Methodist Church and William Taylor Hotel, converted to campus housing in 1981.
The existing structure comprises reinforced concrete floors supported by concrete-encased, riveted steel beams and columns. Historically, lateral resistance relied on wind braces, unreinforced masonry infill, and concrete infill walls. A nonlinear analysis approach was employed to implement an elegant retrofit strategy that includes a new asymmetric reinforced concrete core with steel outriggers and buckling-restrained braces extending through the 28-story tower. The approach strengthens a vulnerable historic building while preserving its historic facade.
Recent milestones underscore the project’s scale and complexity, including a mat foundation pour that required 105 concrete trucks. This tour provides an opportunity to observe complex construction engineering in progress, to understand the sustainable retrofit practices adopted, and to learn about the construction challenges and solutions that are shaping the project.
The site tour will be followed by a happy hour hosted by YMF at a nearby location.
