SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals Updates

This technical presentation aims to highlight and explore some of the key changes in the SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals. Part One of this series will cover updates to Examples 1, 29, and 49 in Volume 1 and Example 8 in Volume 3. Part Two will cover updates to Example 1 in Volume 2 and Example 11 in Volume 4.

Part One Speakers:
Mason Thau
Mason Thau is an EIT at Martin/Martin. He studied at UC Berkeley, where he performed and published graduate research in base isolation and nonstructural component anchorage to support proposed changes in ASCE 7-28. Since graduating, Mason has joined the ASCE 7-28 Seismic Subcommittee as an associate member and helped author multiple significant code change proposals, leveraging his perspective and skills as a younger engineer to contribute meaningfully to the committee’s work.
Mason is also an active member of SEAOC. He is the past-chair of the SEAONC Young Member Forum and Chair of the SEAOC Communications Committee. Among his proudest structural engineering achievements is helping create the College of Fellows Jeopardy Session at the 2024 SEAOC Convention.
Rahul Sharma
Rahul works at the intersection of analysis and design for both new and existing buildings. He is passionate about developing complex problem-solving skills and generally takes on challenging projects. Rahul also gets involved in several standard committees such as the ASCE 7 Seismic Subcommittee, the Building Seismic Safety Council’s (BSSC) Provision Update Committee (PUC), and the SEAONC and SEAOC Seismology Committee.
Part Two Speakers:
Doug Hohbach
Doug Hohbach, S.E. has designed and served as structural engineer-of-record for a wide range of buildings; from high rise office to multi-unit residential buildings. He has also authored technical articles on the structural behavior of steel, concrete, and wood buildings. He has provided peer review services to the State of California and Stanford University among others.
Mr. Hohbach received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Princeton University and his M.S. in Structural Engineering from Stanford University. He has served in several important roles in the Structural Engineer’s Association of California, including Seismology Committee Chair and President and also has served on the Applied Technology Council Board, the California Division of State Architect Advisory Board and the Structural Engineer’s of Northern California Board.
Rafael Sabelli
Rafael Sabelli is a Senior Principal and Director of Seismic Design at Walter P Moore. Rafael is co-author of Ductile Design of Steel Structures. Rafael has earned a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Special Achievement Award from AISC, as well as the T.R. Higgins Lectureship award. The Structural Engineers Association of Northern California awarded him the Krawinkler Award or outstanding leadership in implementing state of the art research into practice.
