Wednesday, June 12  - NIGHT 1

Basics Of Post-Tensioning Design
Speaker: Bijan Aalami, PT Structures

The presentation covers the background to several aspects of post-tensioning design which are critical to effective PT member performance. Starting with a brief introduction of the function of post-tensioning, the focus is turned to the impact of precompression on member response. This is followed by PT member shortening, its critical influence on member’s performance, and its design consideration. Next, the presentation continues with reciting the current post-tensioning design schemes. This leads to a somewhat detailed explanation of the most commonly used load balancing method and its extension. The background, contribution, and calculation of hyperstatic actions is covered in detail. The critical design aspects specific to flanged beams are explained. The presentation concludes by reviewing the scenarios for beneficial and disadvantageous application of post-tensioning.

Post-Tensioning Slab Design and Construction
Speaker: Steve Marusich, Forell/Elsesser Engineers

This presentation will cover the practical aspects of post-tensioned floor slab design, focusing on overall approach and layout techniques as they relate to code requirements and constructability concerns.  It will include a discussion of the minimum code requirements with respect to post-tensioning, mild reinforcement, and allowable slab stresses as well as other strength and serviceability considerations.  These topics will be demonstrated by various real-life case studies highlighting lessons learned in both design and construction.

Seismic Design of Reinforced Masonry Shear Wall Systems
Speaker: P. Benson Shing, UC San Diego

This presentation will cover the design of reinforced masonry shear wall systems using the strength design method. Design for in-plane and out-of-plane loads, including shear capacity design for special wall systems and shear friction design according to TMS 402-16 will be elaborated on. Special design considerations and analysis methods for low-rise wall systems will be discussed. Recent research findings on the behavior of reinforced masonry wall systems under extreme seismic load conditions will be presented.

Anchorage to Masonry Structures – An Overview 
Speaker: John F. Silva, Hilti

Mr. Silva will address the topic of anchorage to historic and modern masonry structures. The presentation will include code requirements, current developments in the qualification of post-installed anchors for use in masonry construction and suggestions on how to address masonry of unknown origin. He will draw on his experience in design, research, code writing and earthquake reconnaissance to provide context for the ongoing discussions surrounding this topic. 

Masonry Case Study – Rehabilitation of the Sacramento Valley Station (Depot)
Speaker: Kevin S. Moore, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.

Masonry is a prevalent building material, usually in an unreinforced form.  For decades, many of California’s most iconic structures used unreinforced masonry (URM), usually brick, to create schools, churches, office buildings and municipal facilities.  The Sacramento Valley Station (more traditionally known as the Depot) is just such a building, using both URM and concrete as a primary structural system material.

The building is on the National Register for Historic Structures, the California Register for Historic Structures and is a City of Sacramento Landmark.  The building was designed in 1925 and comprises nonductile reinforced concrete frames with unreinforced masonry infill, wood infill roof and floor levels, a concrete slab at the first floor (elevated) and wood pile foundations.  The building was evaluated and retrofit in accordance to ASCE 41. Using advanced analysis techniques, SGH was able to focus retrofit to a few specific locations, reducing construction and historic impact on this important building.  The project provided an opportunity to take advantage of reduced ground motions and use actual material strengths to provide a refined seismic retrofit solution.  These conditions, coupled with a limited ability to add retrofit elements, created a challenging project that was unique and rewarding.

PT Lateral Systems – Recentering PT Walls
Speaker: Marc Steyer, Tipping Structures

Well-proportioned vertically post-tensioned concrete walls for seismic resistance offer the predictable and desirable energy dissipation of special reinforced concrete walls, with the unique benefit of self-centering behavior. Because of these inherent attributes, and because this system uses conventional construction techniques, PT walls can provide enhanced seismic performance for little to no premium in the structural frame. 
This talk will discuss the theoretical and practical issues and opportunities encountered when incorporating post-tensioned walls into the structural design. Pertinent considerations will be discussed, ranging from the early phases of conceptual design through implementation in the field, with topics including:

System attributes and benefits
Key facets of system behavior
Analytical techniques
Proportioning guidelines
Design and detailing
Constructability issues
