Supplement Viscous Damping – Improves Performance While Reducing Costs
 Tuesday, August 6th

The new Sutter Health hospital on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco opened to patients this March.  The structure employs the first use in the United States of Viscous Wall dampers to supplement the strength of the steel moment resisting frame system for seismic forces.  Viscous wall dampers were developed in Japan in the late 1980s and have been used extensively for tall, steel and concrete structures in Japan.  Viscous wall dampers successfully controlled seismic inter-story drifts, allowing a significant reduction in the moment frame steel weight. As a first time use in a California hospital, the design criteria, full-scale testing and nonlinear analysis were thoroughly reviewed by an independent peer review panel and OHSPD.  Dynamic Isolation Systems, Inc., worked closely with the design team to develop prototype test specimens, fabricate and deliver the 119 wall dampers to the fabricator for erection.
