FRP Solutions to Structural Engineering Challenges - Review of Best Practices and Detailing

Advanced composite materials have been used for nearly a half century in the aerospace, marine and automotive industries. During the last two decades, civil and structural engineers have begun to realize the advantage of these materials as a means to strengthen, retrofit and rehabilitate existing structural members/buildings. Advanced composite materials are composed of reinforcing fibers – either glass or carbon – combined with a high-strength epoxy for force transfer and adhesion to structural members. Advanced composites have a proven track record on a variety of structural applications such as columns, beams, slabs, walls, piles, chimneys, transmission pipelines and other structural members. The advantages of using advanced composites include its light-weight, high strength, fast application, aesthetic qualities, excellent weathering properties, flexibility in terms of installation, cost-effectiveness and field proven applications. There have been many innovations in the past several years regarding advanced composites. One of the major innovations is the improved force transfer using the mechanical anchors, which have opened the door to new strengthening techniques and capabilities. However, further code uniformity is required for the design/installation of anchors.
Scott Arnold is the Director of Engineering Solutions at Fyfe Company. He has been working with Fyfe Company for twenty-four years on the design and development of various FRP strengthening systems. He is a licensed civil engineer in multiple states and has worked directly on thousands of projects and hundreds of structural and environmental durability test programs.
