December Dinner Meeting:  Structural Engineering, Sustainability and Super Concrete

Berkeley Structures, a firm committed to Sustainable and Resilient design and construction, has developed an ultra-high performance concrete for the DOD that has recently been declassified thus now available for non-military use. In addition to material cost savings and shorter placing/curing times, it has excellent weather and corrosion resistance and 100+ year life expectancy with zero maintenance. But here’s the biggest gamechanger – it can attain concrete strengths of 32 ksi and higher classified strengths. Think of the possibilities! Come meet the inventors and learn about its development, technical features, and sustainable applications that structural engineers can bring to the table to help make the world a better place.

Kathy Rai, PE, GC, LEED AP, SEAONC Member, is the Chief Engineer and Strategist of Berkeley Structures, Kathy  is an co-inventor of high performance materials and structures, and Chief Investigator  in R&D of military grade materials, and a National Science Foundation awardee on a $1.3M project in concrete precast. She has produced world-class buildings around the world (design of hospitals and high-rises, budget/cost auditing, LEED certification) and has presented nationally and internationally on green building strategies and published numerous articles on precast systems under seismic loading, risk mitigation, and integrated design. Ms. Rai has an MS from UC Berkeley and MBA from Carnegie Mellon.

Sean Feng is the CEO of Berkeley Structures is a world technical leader in chemical formulation and has won US Military contracts over the last 15 years researching and developing classified products used by the Air Force, DTRA and on the latest Navy Ford Class Supercarriers, including Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) materials/structures (with the highest performance/cost ratios) for which he holds 2 patents, and Biomimetic Hybridized Nano-/Meso-particle superstructures (record-breaking strength-to-weight ratio). He graduated from Berkeley Haas Marketing & Finance, and previously served as a Lead Software Architect for several Fortune 500 companies.
