SEAONC Seismology Concrete Subcommittee Presents:
S.K. Ghosh's presentation on Ductile Concrete Couple Wall Lateral Systems
Tuesday, December 1st from 12:00 - 1:00 PM

SEAONC Members Only

Please join the SEAONC Seismology Concrete Subcommittee for a presentation by S.K. Ghosh, Dr. Ghosh will give an overview of Ductile Coupled Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls, which will be recognized as its own distinct seismic force-resisting system in ASCE 7-22. Detailing provisions for this type of system are already provided in ACI 318-19. Currently, coupled and uncoupled shear wall systems are treated the same in the building code, even though ductile coupled shear walls can provide significantly more energy dissipation compared to uncoupled shear walls. The potential of ductile concrete coupled wall systems has been recognized for some time but recent FEMA P695 analysis has justified a higher R-factor for these types of systems. Dr. Ghosh is a world-renowned expert on this topic and was instrumental in getting this through building code committees.

The concrete subcommittee has been researching this topic and is planning to produce a design example on this type of lateral system. We are collecting questions the structural engineering community has on this topic in a google doc. The committee will investigate questions submitted in the google doc and address them in the design example. Anyone interested in helping out with this design example is encouraged to contact the concrete subcommittee seismology@seaonc.org.
