The May 7th Monthly Meeting was dedicated to presenting the 2019 SEAONC Student Scholarships and Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards in a ceremony held at The Sir Francis Drake Hotel in San Francisco.

A total of 11 awards of Merit and Excellence were presented. Each Award of Excellence recipient had an opportunity to give a brief acceptance speech describing what made the project an “Excellent” experience for them, and as well as a chance to acknowledge those who contributed to their project and award.

Each year, the SEAONC Board awards 2-4 scholarships of $5,000 each to university students who intend to pursue a career in structural engineering. Students must be either juniors entering their senior year of study or seniors who have been accepted to a master’s degree program. SEAONC assembles a jury from the Board of Directors, chaired by the Past President, to evaluate scholarship applications. The 2019 jury consisted of Past President Taryn Williams, Vice President Janiele Maffei, and Board Director Bill Tremayne

This year, Computers and Structures, Inc. (CSI) made a generous donation to SEAONC to fund additional scholarships, and a total of 7 scholarships were awarded, more than in any previous year. Ashraf Habibullah shared a few words with the membership about the importance of supporting students, as they are the future of structural engineering. SEAONC and CSI were proud to recognize so many well-deserving students.

The 2019 scholarships were awarded to Elyssa Adams and Diego Rivera of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Tamika Bassman and Sarah Cook of UC Berkeley, Nikhil Chaudhuri and Tim Ngo of Stanford University, and John O’Hagan of Santa Clara University. Six of the seven students attended the event to receive their award in person. SEAONC extends our sincere congratulations to all of the students, who inspired the jury and the audience not only with their academic achievements, but their well-rounded accomplishments, maturity, global perspective, and leadership.
