July President's Message

It is a privilege to begin my year as SEAONC President. I lookforward to working with Vice President Emily Guglielmo and the new Board of Directors on the important goals of the association. First on the agenda is to thank Past Presidents Taryn Williams and Tim Hart. As Vice President last year I had the opportunity to serve with both Taryn and Tim on the board and pledge to try to follow in their estimable footsteps.

SEAONC is a membership organization that relies on membership fees to support strategic goals established and updated periodically by the elected board. While the board is charged with the oversight of those goals, the work of the association is largely carried out by the tireless volunteers on its various committees. Outlining the SEAONC committees and just highlighting their achievements would take up most of what I hope to be a brief message. Instead I will include the great works of a few committees with each message throughout the year.

As a start I would like to praise the efforts of the SE3 committee. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of attending an SE3 workshop, the three “Es” stand for engineering, engagement, and equity. The mission of the SE3 committee has been taken up throughout SEAOC and at the national level. While I can comfortably say we have the “engineering” covered, SE3 documented the engagement and equity issues that challenge all of us as individuals, as members of firms, and as an profession. Armed with this data, many SEAONC firms of various sizes have undertaken to study, understand, and, when necessary, improve upon the engagement and equity within their organizations. I applaud those efforts and will endeavor to see that these best practices are shared. We have ongoing work to support and new work to encourage and I look forward to serving as your President.
